BUILD A SHED USING STORAGE BUILDING PLANS

Most homeowner’s problem when it comes to de-cluttering is the need of having a large storage space where they can put all their stuff in. Next, make sure to use 4 steel-cabled ground anchors when you placed down the plywood that will be used as the shed’s flooring. Latch the anchors securely on each end corner of the frame. For the floorings, use ¾” tongue-and-groove ACX plywood to build a durable floor that won’t sag or bounce in time.

 Building the Roof Trusses

•    The trusses that you will use must be made of 2 x 4 rafters and a 2 x 4 ceiling joist. Secure together 3 boards using a 1/2in. plywood gussets. Now, begin to cut the rafters to a proper length with a 40° in each end. Next is to cut 2 x 4s to 10ft. long to be used for the bottom chords.
•    Now, create the frame on the shed floor to assemble the trusses. Line up the lower part chord along with the border end of the plywood floor.
•    After that cut 4 of 24" long 2 x 4s. Set two beside each rafter and attach them to the plywood floor. Then, make use of these short boards as stop blocks for the installation of and building each truss. Secure plywood gussets to both sides of every truss using a carpenter's glue which can be bought on every hardware stores, and 1" of roofing nails and arranged the trusses away.  

Setting up the Walls

Start by cutting 2x4 parts to be used for the end walls and placed them on the floor shed. Place the studs 24" on its center and lock them using 16d nails. Next, trim the plywood siding to its proper size and fasten it to the wall's framework using a 6d galvanized nails. Then, properly elevate the end wall in its proper location. Putting up the Roof Trusses

Begin by installing the end trusses, make sure that the plywood siding is nailed just before you raised the trusses up. Secure the trusses up by using 3” deck screws, driven onto the wall’s top plate. Next, set up the last roof trusses, cover with plywood, and fasten lastly the asphalt roof shingles.

Adding few more touches

For the windows, use a 5’ long transom type window using a wooden frame and a glass, and then placed it over the end doors.

As for the door, use tongue-and-groove cedar boards and battens. Fastened the battens using 1-1/2” screw and placed the doors using sturdy strap hinges.

Many in Central Oregon are looking for a Rubbermaid outdoor storage shed and want a true comparable difference between them and buying/renting a wooden shed. In September of 2017, we wrote a great article explaining everything there is to know about them. But let’s get into greater detail about the difference between plastic, metal and wood. The results may surprise you.

 Sanitation

Contrary to popular belief, wooden cutting boards are safer than plastic cutting boards. What does that have to do with sheds? Everything. Plastic is more prone to bacteria, spores and mold. According to research done by Dean O. Cliver, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Food Safety at the University of California, "With the plastic, after manual washing as I would do under my kitchen faucet, we could still recover bacteria from grooves" After replicating Cliver's research, both the USDA and the FDA have changed their food prep recommendations to wood. “Wooden cutting boards pulled the bacteria down beneath the surface of the cutting board, where they didn’t multiply and eventually died off.”

Aesthetics

 Plastic sheds will not keep its color. “Over time the dyes are destroyed by light removing any color. simultaneously the plastic is degraded and becomes rough on the surface and acquires an inhomogeneous refractive index within the structure due to the destruction of bonds and oxidation and the end of chains. These two structural changes cause scattering, and since blue is scattered more than the other colors due to the relation of scattering with wavelength to the fourth power, the material appears blue when looking at the reflected light. If you look at transmitted light going through the plastic it should appear yellow.”

Heat

Even though wooden sheds without insulation remain hotter than the outside environment, wood is still better because it continues to hold into moisture which cools the shed down. Our website says you can rent a shed from us for $69 - $109 a month ($150 delivery)as an alternative to a storage unit. We compared the difference between a storage facility and our sheds and it will blow your mind. For example, an 8x8 storage facility average cost is $80, according to storage.com. Compare that to $69 AND you get to keep your stuff on your own property.

An 8x12 storage facility will cost you around $100 a month while our cost is $89 and an 8x16 will cost you $120 a month while our rental shed is $109. Are you starting to see a trend here? We are always around $10 cheaper a month and that saves YOU $120 a year plus you get to store your stuff on your own land. If you are good at math, then you will calculate that the cost is around the same when you count the delivery charge, however, the benefits outweigh that.

Why you should consider investing into a micro house in Central Oregon

By 2050, Bend Oregon’s population will grow from 180,000 to almost a million. This means, Redmond, Sisters, Prineville and La Pine will grow as well. Central Oregon does not have the accommodations for jobs and housing during this boom and therefore, people will be wanting cheap places to rent. A wise investment would be to purchase property outside of town (a few acres) and build a micro house or shouse (small house).

Acreage in the high desert is really cheap. Many are living off the grid by building their own mini houses on desert land. Some are actually renting out their current house in town and building a tiny house outside of town to allow their renters to pay their mortgage. The average cost per acre in the high desert outside of town, according to the USDA, is anywhere from $3,000 - $20,000 depending on many common factors. The cost for a tiny house is around the same.

For small investment, you could have land and a house for either recreation, living or whatever you desire. Let’s go over some numbers. Outbuilders.com has built many Walker Cabins for customers. A basic Walker Cabin costs $2,150. From the little research I have done on land outside of town, I easily found a 10 acre lot for $5,000. For less than $10,000 you can own a sizable piece of land and a place to live. 

There are a few considerations if you plan on owning a mini house. Zoning regulations will cause you trouble if you plan on having a foundation. A considerable cost is associated if you do. Ways around that are to build the mini house without one. You will probably not find a well or can have one dug so all water that you use must be drove in. You also will need to build your own septic tank if you plan on having running water. Septic systems can cost up to $30,000. 

Do some research on mini houses or google micro houses (shouse). You will be shocked to find them so inexpensive and how popular they have become. The investment will pay off as the city grows outward. Your property will increase in value as the population brings with it gas, water, sewer and electricity. The land you bought so cheap could be worth 100 fold in 20 years if you invest wisely and take care of the land.

 How to find or buy a Horse Shelter in Central Oregon (Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Sisters, La Pine & Madras) 

Horses need covering every now and then. In the cold weather, a healthy horse can withstand the elements without any issues, however, when it rains, they actually roam to seek out shelter. Rain Rot (rain scald - streptothricosis) is one of the most common forms of issues horses face when in rain, but that is reserved for more warm climates (tropics) and rare in places like Bend, OR. However, it is quite common for older horses to retire here and they definitely need shelter from the elements, therefore you must have some type of horse shelter built on your property even in the high desert.

What kind of horse shelters are there? Well, there are several types that come in wood, metal, tent, rock/dirt or plastic:

Bank Barn

A bank barn is one that is built into a hill or slope (dirt, mud, sand or rock). These are hard to build because of our lava bed rock. It’s common to see old bank barns made of lava rock on one side and wood on the other since settlers here in Oregon didn’t have the machinery to dig up the lava rocks around here 

Run-In Shed (Loafing Shed)

A run-in shed or “loafing shed” is a wooden structure that is horizontal in nature. It is what the words state they are. A Shed a horse can run in to. Loafing Shelters are more and more popular with the various Llamas and Horses in our area.

A box stall is a place inside a barn where an animal has room to roam around freely. Some barns were built to store perishables, however it is not uncommon to remodel one with additional box stalls in them for animals.

Lean-To

A lean-to is a simple shelter that leans against a wall. You see these often on the outside of barns for equipment storage, animal shelters and other things. Lean-to’s are perfect for Central Oregon and really easy to build.

A good Christmas present for dad would be a car port in Central Oregon this year

A car port is a simple shelter for a car, truck or RV whether it is built with, wood, metal, poles or a lean-to (leans against a house or a barn). Some are made of aluminum or steel but we make ours out of wood. In our opinion, metal isn’t really recommended for the high desert in Central Oregon due to our dry weather and hot sun conditions. Rust accumulates more in Central Oregon than on the Coast believe it or not. You would be surprised that a well-built wooden car port can last over a hundred years and is the right choice for your dad’s Christmas gift.

The benefits of having a car port is quite overwhelming, especially in Central Oregon which seems to only have two seasons: Winter & August ;-). Garage builders and what they need to know

If you’re looking to build a garage on your land whether it’s a standalone or a lean to, there are a few things you need to know before you hire the right garage builder, especially if you live in a rich elemental environment like Central Oregon. You simply cannot build anything you want any time you want because of licensing, safety, city and county regulations and/or requirements. Let’s take a look at what you need to know before you bring garage builders over to look at your place or when considering doing it yourself.

Car Storage

How many cars do you have? The typical Oregon family has 2. In Central Oregon, it’s wise to store both of your cars in a garage because of the elements. The size of your current cars may not be the issue. As we get bigger, so do cars! Cars are slowly getting wider and wider so calculating for your current cars may not be such a good idea. Give it some thought before you make your final decision.

Storage Space

This is a no brainer. Every garage is used for storage so while you are considering the length, width and height, also consider what you are going to be storing between now and in the future. Think about your regular routine and how much stuff you have stored over the years. Calculate what you may accumulate. A rough guess is ok but you will be happy in the future you really thought about this. Storage space is a must.

Ventilation

Exhaust, paint and fumes are going to be permeating throughout any garage from time to time. Gas (propane and gasoline) and paint will be spilled so you need to account for this when deciding on a design or before building. Consider a window or vents above near the ceiling walls so fumes can exit without problems.

Heating and Cooling

If the garage is made for cars and storage, no need for insulation. However, if you are going to be working in the garage, you definitely want to insulate and sheetrock it. Without it, you will be in the extremes and uncomfortable. Make sure you give it a lot of thought and budget for insulation. Even with cars and storage, you never know what you may do in the future and you will be glad you did it.

Workspace

A garage with a workspace must be accounted for during the winter if you plan on keeping the cars indoors while you are working. A workbench and room to reach around tools, shelves and cabinets should be considered during the winter. Give yourself a few more feet in length to account for fixing things and tinkering around.

Electrical

What devices will you be plugging into the wall? Welding machine? Shop Vac? Industrial heaters? Compressors? Electrical hydraulics? Give it a lot of thought here because you may want to install 220 volt outlets for certain items. If you’re going to build a garage or have us do it, make sure you request the 220. You will be happier knowing you can plugin to both types of outlets. Also consider installing outlets on all sides and in strange places, You would be surprised where you could use an outlet. Also, consider Ethernet for internet modems and routers.

Tool Storage

Everyone who is building a garage has tools. If one is building a garage, they naturally would be a homeowner and homeowners have tools. It’s a must! Close your eyes and act like you are walking through your new garage. See if you can imagine the cars and plenty of room to get around them along with getting to your tools. Your imagination is a must for a project like this and the garage builders will appreciate the time you spent putting your specs together.

Concrete Sealant

After concrete is poured, there will definitely be cracks where fluid can leak to the ground. Consider sealing it with paint (epoxy) or any type of sealer so that when something does leak, the cleanup is a snap.

Licensing / Permit

All construction, except one and two family dwellings and their access structure are subject to the requirements of the Oregon Structural Specialty Code. Exemptions are listed here. This means you need a permit to build a garage whether it is a lean to or not. Why do you need a permit? Because according to the City of Redmond, “Building permits are usually required when building safety might be affected. You will need a permit to construct, enlarge, alter, move or demolish any one or two family dwelling or related structure.” It’s all about safety. If you build the garage by yourself and it falls on someone else, the state does not want to be responsible for your mistakes so it takes precautions like this in order to protect itself and others. How do you get a permit? Oregon makes it really easy. They have a simple online form you can fill out here.

Prior to popular belief, an animal shelter is not a place you drop animals off whether stray or to be cremated, rather a true animal shelter is a building that shelters animals from the elements. In Central Oregon, animal shelters are very popular. Regardless if you believe the economy is in a recession or not, many people have been building their own chicken coops, animal shelters and pens for raising their own eggs, meat and produce. There are several types of animals shelters and this article gives you an idea as to what to look for if you’re in the market for an animal shelter.

Barns

According to Wikipedia, “A barn is an agricultural building usually located on farms and used for various purposes. In the North American area, a barn refers to structures that house livestock, including cattle and horses, as well as equipment and fodder, and often grain.” There are several types of barns. Pole barns (post frame), post & beam barns, modular barns, steel building barns, gable barns, gambrel barns, shedrow barns, run-in barns, lean to barns, storage barns, chicken barns, pavilion barns, bank barns and monitor barns. We could write an article all about barns in itself, but we need to stick to animal shelters. It’s important to know the types of barns there are as there are not that many lists out there to choose from on the internet. Round Stable

A round stable is a solid round building with a roof that has a dirt center and stables inside the walls in circumference. It’s a style that is favored outside of the United States as there are not that many here. The design is for horses mainly.

A shed is a roof structure made of wood or metal used as a storage space, greenhouse, a shelter for animals, a mini house or a workshop. There are several types of sheds. Better barn, cascade shed, classic gable, economy shed, economy barn shed, greenhouse, lean to shed, loafing sheds, pacific sheds, premium sheds, rustic sheds, tall shed and walker shed. Most used sheds are turned into an animal shelter 

Gables

A gable is a part of a wall that encloses the end of a pitched roof. It’s a roof shape style that is generally triangular - points. These types of animal shelters are perfect for places that pack a lot of snow because the design helps the snow fall off the roof easier so there is less stress on the frame.

Animal House

An animal house is a design of barn, shelter or shed that mimics the home owner’s house. The design is all about aesthetics and home value than for real comfort for the animal itself. Although they all come with a roof, the inside of it is where the owner must

Chicken Coop

Wikipedia, “A chicken coop or hen house is a building where female chickens are kept. Inside hen houses are often nest boxes for egg-laying and perches on which the birds can sleep, although coops for meat birds seldom have either of these features.” We wrote an excellent article about how to build one here.

Horse Barn

A horse barn is a stable or barn that keeps livestock – mainly horses. Commonly made with separate stalls for each animal. There are pole barns, cedar barns, two story barns, or metal barns. Scroll back up to “barns” and read more about the kinds of barns there are.

Feed Bin

There are several types of animal feed bins. Flat pack bins, front access bins, bulk storage bins, hopper bins, equine feeders, foal feeders, horse feeders, drinks bowls to water troughs. They come in plastic, galvanized (coating of iron or steel with a layer of zinc) to wood sheds. Some animal shelters have feed bins that are built inside.

Panel Shelter

A panel shelter is a makeshift arch way that bows from one side of the ground to the other. At first glance it would look like an arch. Really simple to build and cheaper than anything out there but not suitable for harsh environments.

Pallet Shelter

A pallet shelter is exactly what it says. A shelter made by wooden pallets. It’s really a brilliant economic way to make an animal shelter because pallets are usually free.

Pig Pen

A pig pen animal shelter is a simple enclosure for pigs. Some have roofs and some do not. It depends on the environment.

Pavilion

A pavilion animal shelter doesn’t have walls but a roof only. Usually they require four posts and a sturdy roof. The word “pavilion” stands for decoration so usually when a pavilion animal shelter is erected, they are expensive and pretty.

Round Pen

Wikipedia says a round pen is, “…sometimes called a bullpen is a round enclosure used for horse training. They range in diameter from a minimum of 30 feet (9.1 m) to a maximum of 100 feet (30 m), with most designs 50 to 60 feet (15 to 18 m) in diameter. Footing is usually sand or other soft dirt...”

And finally, an indoor arena animal shelter is an arena is an enclosed area, often circular and/or oval shaped, designed to showcase horses.
